Because of the activities of Owens, Shane McMahon gave Zayn another open door on the April 11 scene of Raw to wind up a #1 contender by having him face Styles, who had won the contender's match the prior week, however Zayn lost to Styles. On the April 18 scene of Raw, McMahon booked Zayn and Owens in a match at Payback, where Owens crushed Zayn. On the May 9 scene of Raw, Zayn crushed The Miz to enter a lethal four-path match for the Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules, yet Miz would hold the title. On the May 23 scene of Raw, Zayn vanquished Sheamus to fit the bill for the 2016 Money in the Bank stepping stool match, yet he was unsuccessful as the attaché was won by Dean Ambrose. On July 19 at the 2016 WWE draft, Zayn was drafted to Raw. At Battleground, Zayn crushed Owens. At SummerSlam, Zayn and Neville crushed The Dudley Boyz on the Kickoff Show.
